The Totem Experiment at the Lhc

چکیده

In order to fulfil its physics programme the TOTEM experiment1 has to cope with the challenge of triggering and recording events in the very forward region with a good acceptance for particles produced at very small angles with respect to the beam. The evaluation of the total cross section with an error down to 1÷2% will in particular require the simultaneous measurement of the elastic scattering at low values for the squared four-momentum transfer (|t| ∼ (pθ)) as well as of the inelastic interaction rate with losses reduced to few per-cents. This involves the detection of scattered protons at a location very close to the beam, together with efficient forward particle detection in inelastic events. A flexible trigger provided by its detectors will allow to take data under all LHC running scenarios. The combination of the CMS 2 and TOTEM experiments, representing the largest acceptance detector ever built at a hadron collider, will also allow the study of a wide range of diffractive processes with an unprecedented coverage in rapidity. For this purpose the TOTEM trigger and data acquisition (DAQ) systems are designed to be compatible with the CMS ones, in order to allow common data taking periods foreseen at a later stage 3. In the following, after a general overview of the experimental apparatus, the main features of the TOTEM physics programme will be described.

At the LHC, diffractive physics will be explored by the dedicated experiment TOTEM whose Technical Design Report has been approved in Summer 2004. The experimental programme will be carried out partly in TOTEM standalone mode for purely forward phenomena like elastic scattering, and partly in collaboration with CMS for processes requiring a full rapidity coverage. ATLAS and ALICE are interested...

TOTEM: The experiment to measure the total proton–proton cross section at LHC

TOTEM is an experiment dedicated to the measurement of the proton–proton total cross section (σ TOT ) at LHC, i.e. the probability that two protons interact at the center of mass energy of 14 TeV. In addition to that, it will also study the proton–proton elastic scattering and diffractive dissociation processes. TOTEM foresees specific measurements and experimental techniques which are very dif...

Blois07/eds07 Proceedings

The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, √ s =14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-pT physics, but also low-x and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-x and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments. 1 Prospects of Forward Energy Flo...

Diffraction and Total Cross-Section at the Tevatron and the LHC

At the Tevatron, the total pp̄ cross-section has been measured by CDF at 546GeV and 1.8 TeV, and by E710/E811 at 1.8 TeV. The two results at 1.8 TeV disagree by 2.6 standard deviations, introducing big uncertainties into extrapolations to higher energies. At the LHC, the TOTEM collaboration is preparing to resolve the ambiguity by measuring the total pp cross-section with a precision of about 1%...

Crystals Application in the Totem Experiment to Increase the Acceptance of a Roman Pot∗

Bent crystal may enhance the physics reach of a nearbeam physics detector in the CERN-LHC, by increasing the acceptance of scattered protons in low transverse momentum reactions. As an example we present simulations demonstrating the increase of the Roman Pot acceptance in the TOTEM apparatus. Starting from the MadX v6.5 collision optics, a crystal is placed at different longitudinal and transv...
